Question: Does Proactiv actually work?

We see the ads on TV of our favorite celebrities advertising how well Proactiv worked for them to clear their acne.  So are these celebrities actually telling us the truth about Proactiv? Let's look at the active ingredients in Proactiv+. The first active ingredient in step one is 2.5% benzoyl peroxide. In step 2 the active ingredient is also 2.5% of benzoyl peroxide. In step 3 the active ingredient is 0.5% of salicylic acid.  There are many inactive ingredients in each of these steps. Step 1 of Proactiv+ is supposed to cleanse and smooth the skin.  Step 2 is supposed to target the acne and treat it ,and step 3 is supposed to refine and hydrate the skin. Goal: Wash Your Face and We Are Still Alive

You can stop worrying, Dr. Kelli and I are alive and well.  After our little hiatus, we are ready to get back in gear. This coming week we had planned to do a goal for face washing.  I started my usual searching for evidence, studies, etc about face washing.  Well, to be honest I haven't put a ton of time into it, but I can't find any really great studies on it.  Maybe it's because your not going to find a bunch of people to not wash there face for a long time to compare face washers vs not face washers. I wash my face once a day usually.  Sometimes when I am feeling like an over achiever I wash my face at night (sometimes I even floss when I do that for extra gold stars). So while … [Read more...]

Flossing....What do I say about something I loathe doing???  You should think I would love to floss since I cannot stand things stuck in my teeth.  I am obsessed with toothpicks and I never have one too far from me.  My friends have even gotten me toothpick holders for presents before.  So why is flossing so hard for me to do? I would say on average I floss about 1-2 times a week.  I was in Maui this past week and ate a lot of good food! Well I didn't have any toothpicks 90% of the time so guess what I had to use?? Good ol' floss!  So I ended up flossing 1-2 times a day while I was there.  I was so impressed with myself!  Now the hard part for me is trying to keep that up now that I'm … [Read more...]

Question: Why is Fluoride Important?

So why is fluoride important?  The CDC lists these reasons why fluoride is essential for good dental health in both children and adults: Fewer and less severe cavities not as many tooth … [Read more...]

Dr. Erika Week 9 Goal Recap

So, I'll be honest, this goal was kind of selfish.  You see, we have had a smoke detector issue in our house.  A couple of years ago our alarms all started going off at 2 a.m.  After an extensive google search I determined that all of our smoke detectors needed to be replaced because this has happened to other people and they are just old alarms and if you replace them they work fine.  Several hundred dollars later with a house full of brand new smoke detectors, they all started going off again.  Half of them got pulled down, a few cheap ones were purchased and placed around the house, and that is where things have been for the last couple of years.  And one more lesson was learned about Dr. … [Read more...]
